Microsoft is encouraging everyone to install SP2 and with
good reason; it does manage to fix a number of security
problems with the operating system. In fact, even after
my experience with SP2, I still recommend that people
install it on machines not used for development.
Unfortunately, I can’t recommend SP2 anymore for
development machines. After the interesting programming
experience I had with SP2 and Visual Studio, I decided to
research the issue a little further. A number of Web

this particular case, the person lost part of their MSXML
installation. Notice that they had the same symptoms as
me; the Registry settings are simply missing after
installing SP2. The files are probably still in their
System32 folder (as they were with mine), but SP2 decided
that the Registry entries weren’t needed. Fortunately,
someone is already working on these problems. I found a
