Risultati di Microsoft

Microsoft is reporting $3.72 billion in operating income on $7.84 billion in revenue last quarter. Rather than just reading their press release, though, it’s more fun (for some value of “fun”) to go to the Investor Relations page and look at the more detailed numbers. There are some interesting tidbits in the PowerPoint presentation:

  • The little pie chart of their reporting segments (Client, Information Worker, MSN, Home & Entertainment, CE Mobility, Server Platforms, Business Solutions) shows “Microsoft .net” waving its little flag right in the middle of everything. Really? Everything? The XBox, Navision, Microsoft Press? There’s still a bit of hype machine here.
  • Revenue was up 8% compared to the previous year. Sales & Marketing was up 20%.
  • Investment income was substantially down from last year (-36%, though they neglected to put that number on the slide). That includes $19 million lost in “equity investees”. Remember when we used to get news stories about how fabulously amazing the folks handling Microsoft’s investments were?
  • Income for their CE/Mobility reporting segment was up 81%,but they moved MapPoint into that segment this quarter. I’d dearly love to know what the numbers for MapPoint are, and whether they’re hiding a mess in this segment that is one of their current darlings (though it amounts for a minuscule part of the overall income pie).
  • SQL Server revenue is up 40% compared to a year earlier – much stronger than the overall server growth of 17%
  • If you’re keeping track, the company is now sitting on over 46 billion dollars in cash. So they could have conquered half of Iraq all by themselves.
  • Finally, Microsoft’s own list of “Key Business Risks” is no real surprise: Linux & non commercial software, Growing new billings off of large base, Continued legal risk, Worldwide economy, and Executing on multiple fronts.

Microsoft continues to lead the OLAP market

Posted on the May 12th, 2003 under General by Marco Trova

Microsoft continues to lead the OLAP market, even though they were somewhat late entrants. Fans of the company will point to a reasonably-priced, full-featured solution (Analysis Services, included with SQL Server); detractors will mutter darkly about predatory pricing.
