Windows Media Services 9 Series è una splendida tecnologia. E’ stata presentata nel settembre 2002 e l’ultimo aggiornamento l’ha ricevuto con il service pack 1 di Windows Server 2003.
Purtroppo di persone preparate su tale tecnologia non si trovano.
Ho appena finito un progetto su Windows Media Services ed ho realizzato che se lo si deve utilizzare a livello sistemistico va molto bene, immediato e produce subito risultati. In quest’area risiedono la maggior parte degli “esperti”. E potrebbe bastare.
Poco sforzo di setup e sviluppo sufficente per mettere online tv via streaming. C’è solo un problema di banda utilizzata.

Ma se devi andare oltre? Se vuoi creare playlist (palinsesti) personalizzati e dinamici? Se vuoi integrare il video con altre informazioni?
Ci si accorge che l’SDK disponibile utilizza DCOM (!) e quindi non è praticabile l’amministrazione remota di un server per esempio (DCOM è firewall agnostico, diciamo).
Molte delle informazioni sono basate su XML ma non c’è un organico metodo per il loro sviluppo.
Neanche il supporto ufficiale di Microsoft non è di molto aiuto.
Eppure siti come YouTube e Google Video sono molto popolari e la richiesta di tecnologie come queste non dovrebbe mancare.
Il grande Stephen Toub ha condiviso un utile tool per estrarre singoli frames da video nel formato jpg.
Utile per la Media Library che sto sviluppando.
Il sistema utilizzato dal più maggiore operatore televisivo satellitare è il frutto della
collaborazione con
Microsoft e
Kontiki. Quest’ultima fornisce l’applicazione P2P che permette la distribuzione online dei contenuti video. Il problema è che per ora non solo le velocità di scaricamento sono piuttosto mediocri..

Si appropria della banda – dicono i fruitori – lavora in background anche quando si esce dall’applicazione principale, sottrae informazioni dal PC senza un apparente motivo, e soprattutto rimane comunque lento.

Finalmente ecco l’hardware per Media Center 2005 (ma anche Meedio e MediaPortal) che stavamo aspettando. Permette di vedere i canali in Pay Per View del digitale terreste, dalle partite della serie A in diretta al Grande Fratello 6, e soprattutto di registrarle!
Il floppy prende posto nella bay di un floppy da 3.5″ sempre presente e oramai inutile oggi. Costo circa 200 euro.

Questa è un tool da provare.
Ho comprato un tool che ha avuto un discreto successo: Power Compress. E’ un software con la sua interfaccia MCE-style che permette la compressione delle registrazioni TV, notoriamente troppo grosse per la conservazione sia su HD che su DVD.
Come mi trovo? Male! Per carità è molto corretto nel senso che rispetta i DRM non permettendo di registrare i contenuti protetti. Ma ora mi trovo con 3 episodi del Commissario Montalbano compressi ed uno no! 29.95 dollari spesi proprio male.
I vari add-ons che ho trovato non sono stabili o non fanno il loro dovere.

Ti permette di gestire il tuo Windows XP Media Center 2005 da remoto, creando un sito web con il quale è possibile per esempio programmare la registrazione di un programma tv oppure semplicemente rispondersi alla domanda “cosa fanno questa sera in TV?” consultando la guida tv.

Media Center played a big part in our news at CES this year. Some of the highlights include:
- Sales of Media Center have reached the 6.5 million mark in just three years.
- Digital Cable. Media Center in Windows Vista will also deliver new HD scenarios, including CableCARD support, that will allow people to watch and record premium and HD cable programming on Media Center PCs without a set-top cable box.
- Digital Satellite. Microsoft and DIRECTV announced a multiyear agreement that will mean, among other things, that consumers will be able to use a Media Center PC to enjoy high-definition DIRECTV content.
- Sky Networks.
